Seems that a few Texas commits are early risers:

Tevin Mims - DE - Stony Point - 4 stars

Trey Graham - TE - Waco Midway - 3 stars

Garrett Porter - OL - Odessa Permian - 4 stars

BTW, this class is great. Currently ranked #3 nationally from Rivals.

being a d-lineman + being an expert shit talker = Howell being my favorite player in this class.

“Nope.” “I’m not gonna recruit anybody. I’m a grown man and I made my decision. I’m not gonna try and force someone to go somewhere they don’t want to be. Be a grown man and make your own decisions. You can choose to go somewhere else, but your just gonna get whooped.” - Calvin Howell in reference to JaMarcus BitchFarland

Gagree on Howell. He is a quote machine, and will be a favorite of Texas fans.

And, probably the biggest sig of the class just came in . . .

Any chance of getting Jones or Kirkpatrick today?

I am trying to not get my hopes up (is that correct English?), but it's more of a defense mechanism than anything else. We have a tremendous shot at Jones. Kirkpatrick can't leave the state of Alabama for Texas, or else he would never be allowed back. We'll see.

Kirkpatrick I know nothing about, Jones we are in the mix, but I'll be surprised if it's not USC or Florida.

And I know people love Matt Barkley's talent, but seriously:

Barkley: 177-325 (54.5pct), 2,877yds, 22td, 18 int
Gilbert: 277-402 (68.9pct), 4,493yds, 51td, 5 int

I don't care how much better Barkley's competition might be, how is he 13 spots higher than GG?

AND, Gilbert plays against much better competition.

After watching film on Barkley, as well as his performance in practice and game of the Under Armor week, I can see why they are so high on him. He has an arm like Matthew Stafford, only he doesn't look as robotic in his mechanics. Still, production has to account for SOMETHING, and Gilbert out-performed Barkley and pretty much all other QBs in the country.

Whatever. I'll take Gilbert, they can have Barkley (USC), and let's meet up in 2 years and find out the answer.

Eryon Barnett - DB - Euless Trinity - 4 Stars

Also, this probably should have been pointed out earlier, but we have a large number of recruits that greenshirted (enrolled in January), so they are already on campus:

Tariq Allen - LB - Irving McArthur - 4 Star

Thomas Ashcraft - OL - Cedar Hill - 4 Star

Marcus Davis - DB - Clear Creek - 4 Star

Dominique Jones - DE - Kilgore - 3 Star

Kyle Kriegel - DE - Elysian Fields - 3 Star

Alex Okafor - DE - Pflugerville - 5 Star

Kenny Vaccaro - DB - Early - 4 Star

Mason Walters - OL - Wolfforth Frenship - 5 Star

One left to sign (of the committed players), then we wait to hear from the two yet to decide . . .

These people have signed letters of intent to kill their livers at 18th and San Jacinto this year:

Matt Craig, beer drinker, Austin
Drew Fox, beer drinker, Austin
Jeremy Rodriguez, beer drinker/washers, Plano
Chay Jackson, champagne swigger, Midlothian
Denim "Aqua Man" Jentzen, Titos & Lemonade, Damn Near Oklahoma

Still waiting on others.

Quick thoughts on these kids:

Tariq Allen is considered one of the best MLB's in the country, but IMO he might have difficulty transitioning to the Big 12. He is a traditional Mike LB, big, hard hitter, athletic, but he is more north/south than east/west. He is probably a perfect fit in the SEC, but I'm not sure he will be able to make an impact for the first 2 years because it's different playing the spread offense every Saturday.

Ashcraft is a beast. A guy that was supposed to be favoring OU his junior year before attending the UT Junior Day last Feb. (this year's Junior Day is this coming Sunday). Still not sure if he will wind up at guard or tackle. Like almost all OL, he will redshirt. It is also nice to continue to tap into the seemingly brand new Cedar Hill pipeline. They have had 4-5 legit prospects each year for the past half decade or so, and it doesn't appear to be letting up any time soon. With Humphries last year and now Ashcraft, it is obvious that Coach McGuire (my old coach at Crowley HS) loves him some Texas.

Timmons would have had his LOI in sooner, but he had to fix his hair first

Jarvis Jones will announce his choice at 1:30pm eastern.

My gut tells me yes on Jones, no on Kirkpatrick

Also, if you care, Brewster's class in Minn doesnt suck. My friend, Mcnelly, (some of ya'll met him) is the gophers new academic advisor. Thats crazy...

and BTW,
Leonard Ledford , jello shooter/beer drinker also signed his LOI.

BTW, it is nice to (unlike many teams, including some big dogs) have all our letters in so early, not having to worry about losing a kid at the last moment - especially when this class is considered to be so talented.

Eyron Barnett (pronounced "Aaron" I believe) is a kid to watch out for. This kid was not widely known (at least not to recruiting services) last Feb. when he attended Junior Day and committed, but he quickly gathered offers from Florida, OU, and Miami. Schools loved him because of not only his athletic talent as a DB, but because he is one of the biggest cornerback's in the country (6-3, 200lbs). He was injured early in his senior year (torn ACL), so his name has kind of been backburned, but the word is that he would have received 5 Star consideration had he played the season.

Marcus Davis was another recruit that was thought to be leaning towards OU prior to attending UT's Junior Day. But because Mack knew that Davis would be one of the most highly sought-after recruits in the nation (OU, Nebraska, Florida, FSU, UCLA, among others), coach made him a priority BEFORE the Junior Day that Sunday, and had dinner with Davis and his family the Friday evening of that weekend. The Davis crew loved what they heard and committed. Davis was a CB in high school, but will be looked at at both corner and safety in college.

Garrett Gilbert is good. He had better stats against better competition than any QB Rivals ranked. He broke many of the Texas HS records. He does not suck.

Did y’all know this? From dallasnews.com

In the mid-1980s, my good friend, Kirk Bohls, a sports writer for the Austin American-Statesman was doing his due diligence for the newspaper on Texas recruiting.
He called a high profile recruit in Virginia, an electrifying athlete who'd also been a great long jumper in high school and whose father had been an NFL star.
Bohls asked if he was considering Texas. Yes, the kid said. Very much interested.
Smelling a scoop, Bohls then called Fred Akers, the Texas coach, to see if Texas was, indeed, interested in the Virginia kid. Bohls then told Akers that, according to the kid, the feeling was mutual.
A pause came one the line.
"Hey," Akers asked, "you got his phone number?"
And that's how Texas landed Eric Metcalf, one of the most exciting football players in the school's history, a man who went on to become a three-time Pro Bowler and retired with more punt returns for touchdowns (10) than anyone in league history.
As for Bohls, since inadvertently scooping Metcalf for Texas, he's left the recruiting to the coaches. Mack Brown does quite nicely on his own.
