Write up from Inside Texas on Watkins. Sounds like a player, but it should be noted that this is his third commitment and we still have a year to go.

The first 2018 commitment is a flip.

Ocala (FL) Vanguard athlete Justin Watkins flipped from Florida State to Texas at today’s junior day.

“The way coach planned on using me in this offense, getting the ball into my hands, he’s a great guy,” Watkins said. “I like how he came at me. He understands my life. He talked to me about my personal life, not just football. He understands it. I just feel like this is the best fit for me. This is the right place. I’m going to stand out here. I’m from Florida. I want to stand out. I feel like this is the right place to make me stand out. I want to be that different player on the offense.”

Excerpt from the Recruiting Notebook:
How he fits at Texas: Watkins is comparable to Daje Johnson in terms of athleticism and skill set, he’s insanely fast and spends most of his time on his highlights destroying opponents in the run game with his unstoppable combination of lateral and vertical explosiveness. In the Herman offense he’d be best deployed on the perimeter running sweeps, screens, and eventually some routes. Unlike most water-bug quick skill athletes, Watkins is 5-foot-11 and might be easier to find down the field if his hands allow him to become a reliable target. This is an elite level athlete which is undoubtedly why Herman and his staff even bothered to go out of state to grab him. – IB

Coach Says: This kid is a home run waiting to happen. What he lacks in size he makes up for in a big way in speed and elusiveness, as he puts quite a bit of strain on a defense. He can stop and go on a dime and gets up to speed quickly and is probably the last guy you want to see with the ball in his hands and lots of field to work with. While he seems to log a ton of snaps at running back currently, I am willing to bet wherever he lands he ends up splitting out to the slot and being used in a variety of ways so he can get the ball in space. He doesn’t need a ton of room to split a defense, so just get the ball out to him and let him go to work. He’s a no brainer and while he is certain to have a wondering eye, he is worth the time you put in if he signs with your school.

How this affects Texas: His tape is eye-opening. His potential is unlimited. His desire is to play with the ball in his hands. These are all things Texas sees in spades, thus they’ve made a strong push for one of the country’s top athletes. He’s committed to FSU after a brief pledge to LSU, as UT and staff look to change that this weekend during JD. I’ve got a real good feeling here. So do the Horns. – JW

How is the 2018 class looking on a scale of 1-10 ?

Using the Mack Brown scale from early to mid 2000's as the standard, not the 3-star Charlie stuff

Nothing earth shattering yet, but the troll job of Stoops so far has been hilarious. The OL and LB we have so far were thought to be OU leans. Thompson was passed over by OU because of the Cali QB they had committed, but he just flipped to TX, so TX has two QBs that OU had sights on.

According to the message boards and what not TX is thought to be the "cool" place again especially around the Houston area where most of the big recruits are this year. Just need to show some progress under Herman that something is being built here and it sounds like a lot of those guys will buy in.

Herman has already hit the trifecta: he's flipped an elite recruit from OU, LSU, and FSU. Texas lost seven games last season. Ninja.

Still a long way to signing day and a bad season could change all this momentum, but so far I'd say Herman is answering any questions people had on his recruiting ability back in Feb.

A 10 win season is more likely than a 7 win season, IMO. And once Herman recruits in that environment, it'll be church.

I feel great about Leitao enrolling. Also feel great about Herman being a bad mfer on the recruiting trail. Like Hansel, he's so hot right now.
