Texas to change offense next season

Postby HornMafia on Thu Feb 25, 2010 6:15 pm

Mack basically said today that we're going to be going to a 2 back set under center base formation next season. He says they need to be able to run downhill, and the defense needs to be able to plan against that.

A bit shocking?

Seems like we tried to do the samething the year Chance Mock started. Am I wrong?

Hodges Mitchell ran for 1000 yds twice with the same OC and HC. Why not give the staff a benefit of a doubt.
I do recall how we disappeared at times though - with this same OC and HC - when Hodges was here.

I'm sure all those WR's who just signed are thrilled to hear that.

I thought I heard him say that their analysis suggests that more "explosive plays" come from under center.

So just because they're not in the shotgun doesn't mean they are slowing down the offense. If it makes the running game a little more downhill and effective and strengthens the play-action game then it could actually open up the offense more, spread or not.

When we struggled at times this year it looked like they were just playing the game in a small box. So it's not like "The spread" was effective at spreading the field.

This is good news, IMO

Tend to agree with Mak (and Mack) here. Also, I'm not sure we are going to a 100% under center team. I have a feeling it will be mixed in with the spread, so that defenses cannot key in on what the offense is doing. Defenses were able to play the run effectively by creeping a safety up and doubling Jordan. That forced our offense to beat them with the other WRs, who all typically ran routes inside 10 yards. We were good enough to win games like that, but it made life difficult at times (OU, Neb). I see this integration of under center as moving from a 1 formation (spread) - 2 option (run out of shotgun, pass out of shotgun) scheme to a 2 formation (spread, pro set) - 4 option (run out of shotgun, pass out of shotgun, run out of pro set, pass out of pro set) scheme. Teams not only have to defend against more on Saturdays, but they also have to scheme and practice against more Sunday-Thursday.

Isn't that what Texas ran with Simms and Benson?

Good article from Ivan Maisel, who was in town for the start of Spring practice.

This quote made me laugh:

"He's just football-smart. … He would watch film with me every day. We would go through the game plan together. He was always ready in case something happened. Yeah, he had five turnovers in the bowl game. That's the national championship. Had it been Texas A&M or something, it would have been a whole lot different."
