This team sucks

Postby HornMafia on Mon Feb 08, 2010 11:34 pm

This team infuriates me like no other I've ever been around. How in the hell does KU shoot 38%, but they control the game throughout? How do you not score a point in 11 minutes of gametime?

Frustrating as hell.

For the record, Texas has just as many highly rated prospects as KU does. Sure, they are more evenly spread out for Kansas, but it isn't talent that is holding this team back. It's how that talent is being used.

A few thoughts from last night....

--I'm pretty sure that I won't be allowed to watch another game this year....at least with Lindsey, because I think if she hears me say, "I have never seen a team regress so much during the course of a season, especially offensively.", she is going to kill me....

--The Longhorns were 9-28 (32.1%) on FG in the first half. With all due respect to their physical limitations and as politically-correct as possible, I'm pretty sure 5 special needs kids playing "pool" basketball in a wave pool shooting at a floating basket could do better than 9 for 28 (especially if they were as close to the basket as some of the Longhorns were)....

--I really hate to go "that fan", but I was really, really disappointed in the number of Kansas fans that were there/able to get tickets. I know, market value, scalpers, upper deck, yada, yada, yada....from the very beginning, this has been our biggest game of the year, and from what I can tell, a lot of people sold their tickets (or at least any extras) to the highest bidder/any KU fan that they felt was a "sucker". If I had to guess, the upper deck was 25-30% KU, which may not sound like much, but considering the flow of the game, there was never much of a chance for the crowd to be a huge "factor". Frustrating....

Kansas was smooth with their ball movement. Guys were ready for passes, moving around with purpose. They showed maturity and cohesion. I still cannot figure out what their offensive sets are. Do they have any? It seriously looks like five strangers thrown on the court, given the ball, and told to go make something happen. Guys were surprised when balls got passed ot them (turnover), others got trapped and no one could get off their ass to help him out (more turnover), and still other guys found ways to have psychotic episodes when they had to dribble the ball (more turnovers). It truly is baffling how such a seemingly talented team can continually find ways to get worse.

I do think a huge amount of this lies at the feet of Barnes and staff. WTF do you want this team to be offensively?! Make up your mind and then do it... and keep doing it until you improve. You don't have a strong point guard/leader? Fine. Run an offense that doesn't rely on it. But run SOME KIND OF OFFENSE OUT THERE! At least give the semblence of a plan, so guys can at least learn to anticipate what their teammates can/will do and maybe, just maybe, develop some level of cohesion before post-season play. Stop simply trying to out-athlete and dazzle people. How many times does Balbay have to fly under the basket for a reverse layup that misses before he simply pulls up and takes the easier layup? I'm pretty sure much of the weight Pittman lost came from a couple of part sof his anatomy that used to be between his thighs. Unbelievable that a big man like that can play so small under the basket with the ball.

Just frustrating on so many levels... and it's feeling like a broken record with Barnes teams. Scrappy defense that creates some offense their athletic players can exploiut for points, with set offenses a distant after thought.

I forgot a couple of things...

--A few weeks into the season I was trying to figure who was the new __________ __________--Alexis Wangmene? Clint Chapman? Jordan Hamilton (for some, apparently)? I've decided that pretty much everyone not named Damion James is the new __________ __________. Speaking of which (and for the record, I was never that against the guy), but I'll leave it up to others to decide whether it is coincidence that __________ __________ is part of the staff, albeit as "Administrative Assistant" (wtf is that in basketball parlance?).

--Thanked goodness for the timing of other things going on, because I'm pretty sure that 3 or 4 years ago UTWiz have been ready to go postal, and I would have been there feeding him the ammunition....

I'm glad I'm not a big basketball fan, because I can't even begin to imagine how frustrating this team must be to follow regularly.

Texas always has more talent than any other school apparently. I guess that would mean they are always underachieving.

From #1 in the country to possibly #7 in the Big XII in 3 weeks.

With a record of 109-23 and 6 Big 12 titles in 10 seasons, Stoops has reason to be arrogant. But he is not. He is somewhere between humble and unimpressed.

If Texas is underacheiving in football, basketball and baseball in recent years, what does that say about every other program in America? Texas sets the standard of athletic program success. Are you taking one team from one year (one month, really) and generalizing?

I was just poking fun because it seems to be a Pavlovian response. Gibby is clearly more talented.... Texas has as much talent as Kansas....

I'd rather shove a glass rod up my peehole and pound my dong with a hammer than watch this team play basketball ball.

I was struggling with what to say, but that topped anything I could come up with. I fast forwarded the last 12 minutes and still found it painful to watch.

I think it's time to figure out how many more wins gets us into the tournament. I am expecting losses at A&M and Baylor. If they fail to win the other 3 and get to 9-7 in conference, are they out?

And how the fuck does Jordan Hamilton go 3/7 from the 3pt line, but 1/6 from the FT line?

We have a PG that plays 26 minutes, has 2 shots, 0 points and 2 assists. What the fuck is he doing?

In fact, we had 3 guys combine for 78 minutes and 13 points. How. The. Fuck. Does. That. Happen?

Barnes has lost this team, and they've lost me. The Olympics and the Mavericks got the majority of my attention tonight.

(Sorry to hijack the thread, but I just can't bring myself to talk about this 'Horns team.....it's laughable)

On to more important matters.....NICE trade for the Rockets. Trust me, I hate giving up Carl Landry, but you've got Scola and Hayes to man that position when Yao comes back, and Martin can/will light it up with Yao on the court.....dude average nearly 25 points last year in Sacramento....SACRAMENTO....safe to say he wasn't seeing many open jumpers. Assuming Yao comes back full-strength, which is a big assumption, this is a great trade. Even if he doesn't, they now have a legit #1 scoring threat to go along with anything they get in free agency(CHRIS BOSH PLEASE!!!!!). I actually think that's part of the reason they were willing to part with Landry.....I'm certain they're going to make a huge push for Bosh in free agency, and that would create a ridiculous logjam at PF.

Brooks/Lowry
Martin/Buddinger
Ariza/Battier
Bosh/Scola
Yao/Hayes

A man can dream.

That's a 180 on a thread if I've ever seen one.

How are they going to get Bosh if they get rid of McGrady's expiring?

Well McGrady's $23 mil is off the books now.....his contract was expiring one way or the other and wouldn't count against the cap...either way, they were going to have a lot of money to spend this off-season. That being said, they were hoping to add an impact player if the price was right, and this price was right. The Kings were willing to do that trade because Martin makes nearly $10 mil, so the Kings essentially just erased his salary off their books with McGrady's expiring contract. To be honest, I was surprised the Kings would do this.....I know they want to go young, but I think Martin is only 27 or so? On top of that, Les Alexander has absolutely no problem paying a stiff luxury tax, so that always helps.

Well.....guess we can amend that trade. The Rockets went ahead and took on Jared Jeffries $6 million dollars(see owners willingness to pay luxury tax above), but in doing so, they get Jordan Hill(8th pick), in addition to that, they get to swap first round picks with the Knicks in 2011(so long as it's not the #1 pick) and get the Knicks first round pick in 2012(so long as it's not a top 5 pick).....pretty nice f'ing haul for Carl Landry....but I'm pretty sure that Jeffries contract prevents them from realistically bidding on Bosh....which sucks.

Rockets get:
Kevin Martin
Jordan Hill
Jared Jeffries(and his contract)
2012 1st Round Pick
Swap Picks with Knicks in 2011

Rockets give up:
Carl Landry.......OH, and a players that's currently not on the team.

I (heart) Daryl Morey.

Now if he can just guarantee Yao's health???
