The Decemberists' new album comes out in January. Here's what you get if you buy the Deluxe Box Edition:

* Limited edition of 2500 available exclusively on thedecemberists.com
* A one-of-a-kind Polaroid photograph by Autumn de Wilde from the Impossible Project/Decemberists series
* 72 page hardcover book featuring over 250 unique Polaroid photographs by Autumn de Wilde and illustrations by Carson Ellis
* The King Is Dead CD
* Pendarvia DVD – a 30 minute short film by Aaron Rose, documenting the making of the album
* The King Is Dead on 180 gram white vinyl with special cover
* Limited edition Giclée print illustrated by Carson Ellis
* Digital album download code delivered on January 18
* Instant download of live video of "Rise To Me" from Musicfest Northwest in Portland, Fall 2009
* Instant download of "Down By The Water"
* All presented in a linen wrapped, clamshell box with foil-stamped cover

All that will set you back $165. How fucking pretentious is that? Unless I missed the line item that says "We'll come to your house and play the album live for you" I'll be sticking with the $10 download, thank you very much.

There's a cut from the new album up on their site. Not bad.

Aforementioned Decemberists album here:

Any other new releases coming up that I should be aware of?

Edit: To put it mildly, the new Decemberists album didn't exactly blow me away on the first listen.

So...

Stuff I have really liked this year:

Decemberists, The King is Dead
Rural Alberta Advantage, Departing
Middle Brother, Middle Brother
Tapes n' Tapes, Outside

There are another handful that I have enjoyed, but the above are my faves so far.

I just downloaded The Strokes, and I'm sure I'll download the new Lupe Fiasco soon as well (I have three tracks so far that are really good).

Also... just saw that The Avett Brothers are playing Austin in a few weeks, at the Old Settler's Music Festival. While I love those guys and want to see them live again, one-day passes to that are $55, and they're only playing for 90 minutes. I'm not familiar with anyone else on the bill.

Kevin and I are doing back-to-back Weezer shows in June... should be a blast.

Yeah. I'm out on the Old Settler's Music Festival. I loves me some Avett Brothers, but not for $60.

The Middle Brother album is far and away the best thing I've heard this year.

Okay, I'm not enamored with this entire album after a few spins, but "Under Cover of Darkness" is a great song, and there are a few others I like as well.

BTW... Jason Isbell has a deal going for his new album like the one Kevin mentioned in the OP. His first single is available on his website (I think); you just have to give them an email address, and they send you the download link. It's really f'ing good, but a little jarring at first, because he's added a fiddle player, who features prominently on this track.

Also... Isbell plays the Parish in Austin on June 4 (the week before the boat party). I intend to check it out, as tickets are only about $15. I'm guessing that might be tough to do two weeks in a row, Chay, so me and Kevin (and whoever else - open invite!) will go and take pictures/video and taunt you with them, since he isn't playing Denton, er, Dallas.

Isbell is out today... only $5.99 at Amazon.

Foo Fighters are out, too. I'm sure that Amazon will offer a $3.99 special on that one day this week (if not today).

I like what I've heard of it so far. I've had "Codeine" on repeat for the last 20 minutes or so. Great song.

Yeah I like it. Not quite a good as the last one, but still pretty damn good. 1st listen through I would say Codine is prob my favorite.

The new Centromatic album beats everything they've put out in the last 10 years. There's a free track here:

The new Old 97s album isn't doing much for me after a couple listens. There are a couple of tracks that I like, but there's quite a bit of garbage on there too.

I was excited to see "Visiting Hours" on the track listing because I really like the live version from one of the Ranchero Brothers shows from the 1990s they put up on their website, but the version on the album is pretty bad.

Yeah I was fearful it wouldn't be as strong as Grand Theatre 1 because it is hard to come up with that many good songs at once..."Brown Haired Daughter" and "White Port" struck me as solid likes on the first listen.

Just read that She and Him have a Christmas album coming out. I'll be taking a pass on that one because Christmas music sucks balls, but it reminded me that I want to bone Zooey Deschanel.

I told Kristina that if I ever have a chance to have sex with Zooey D I would absolutely do it. I would rip out Ben Gibbard's throat for the chance.
