Best/Worst Movies of 2009

Watched A Serious Man on Friday night. If you've seen The Man Who Wasn't There, which was also done by the Coen Bros, A Serious Man will feel somewhat familiar to you. It's very deliberately paced like TMWWT, but the humor that was present there is nowhere to be found in A Serious Man. It's pretty grim. I thought it was very well done, but I wouldn't want to watch it again.

Avatar: Like about half of the movies that I've seen lately, this one just made me shrug my shoulders and think 'Okay. Whatever." The 3D aspect was pretty cool, I guess.

I finally got around to seeing The Hangover last night. Pretty funny. Not NEARLY as crude as I thought it would be. Superbad was about 10x worse. Unfortunately, I think The Ticket/Grubes ruined the movie for me. I had already heard some of the funniest stuff about 2,300 times.

Superbad sucked balls. One of the worst movies I've seen.

I thought Superbad and The Hangover were both good, but vastly overrated.

Up In the Air is really good, but depressing as hell.

Yikes. Complete opposite for me. Not worth a minute and a half. I was really looking forward to this movie and jumped many on my Blockbuster Queue to get it, so perhaps it would never reach that level of expectation. But f me if that movie wasn't the worst movie I've seen in quite some time.

Ok, here are a couple that I haven't seen reviewed, so I'll give my 2 cents....:

Love Happens, with Aaron Eckhart and Jennifer Anniston: Synopsis from IMDB: About a widower whose book about coping with loss turns him into a best-selling self-help guru. On a business trip to Seattle, he falls for a woman who attends one of his seminars, only to learn that he hasn't yet truly confronted his wife's passing.
This is a tough one to describe--sort of a dramatic, romantic, slight comedy. Between the main, and another supporting character, there are some tough scenes that tug at your heartstrings (especially for me based on personal experience). However, I think it does a good job of breaking those scenes up with some light-heartedness and, while I'm sure many would disagree, I like Jennifer Anniston a lot in these types of roles--she doesn't seem to take herself too seriously (she is there to be the love interest/the pretty girl) and does so without overplaying the part. I thought it was very well done, and like Mak said, in a year of bad movies, stood out to me...unfortunately for just not being terrible. I'd give it a 7.5/10, but I know how people hate the 1/2 points, so 7/10....

Big Fan, with Patton Oswalt. Synopsis from IMDB: Paul Aufiero, a hardcore New York Giants football fan, struggles to deal with the consequences when he is beaten up by his favorite player.
Definitely has the feel of a smaller/independent movie. It is a little slow at times, but for a bunch of hard-core sports junkies, probably entertaining enough to get through. It takes "fandom" to a bit of an extreme, but not so much so that it is completely unbelievable. Probably good if you're looking for something "different" than a big-Hollywood type movie to kill a couple of hours. Probably also a 7/10 (maybe closer to 6.5, but whatever)....

And adding to the "worst movies you've seen" list, I think Makaveli was being very, very generous by giving Couples Retreat a 4/10......
I have no problem with people like Smooth who know what they believe and why they believe it - even if it is different than I.--UTwiz

Kevin, To answer your PM question....

I say Avatar is the best film of the year, not because it is great, but because it is the best thing I have seen (to this point). I gave it 8 out of 10, and that was a barely 8 to put it ahead of Hurt Locker.

If I throw out the 3-D, it's probably a 5. So you have a point. But is it "utter trash" ? I don't think that is fair.

One of the things that surprised me was how interested I was in watching until the end (rare, especially for a 3 hour movie) and the fact I actually cared. I also thought the characters were really well done and "cool" for lack of a better word. And I'm not talking about anything of depth or great substance, but just the way they looked, talked, moved really worked. Also some of the action scenes were really top-notch, and I'm usually the guy who hates action scenes and sometimes fast forwards through them. There was a Battle type scene late in the movie that was particularly fun...and if it reminded me of another movie, it was the King Kong remake. That film featured two scenes that were just stunning and made the whole movie. Avatar was on that level in spots. One other thing that jumped out at me was the "scale" of their world being larger than human....added an interesting element. So maybe it was a great high-tech piece of movie-making more than it was a good movie, but hey I already said this year has sucked.

The Men Who Stare At Goats: Meh. It's not terrible, but it's not anywhere close to being good.
