Also, I highly recommend checking out Anders Parker. He used to be in a band called Varnaline that toured frequently with Centro-matic, which is one of my two or three favorite bands. He has a new album called Skycraper Crow, but I would recommend starting with his self-titled album from 2006.

Ha. They picked my least favorite Dr. Dog song from the lastest album.

I couldn't get into The Felice Brothers, but that's a good song. That song from The Knux is good. Too bad they play at 1:30 on Friday, so there's almost no chance I'll get to see them.

I got the new Avett Brothers last night. It's outstanding. Matt, I'll burn you a copy. I think you'll dig it. Also got The Monsters of Folk (sorry, Kevin, I like Connor Oberst). Just on my first listen... it may grow on me, but IO'm more tempted to listen to the Avett Brothers again.

Just started listening to the new Avett Brothers. I have a ton of respect for their talent, but anything I've listened to prior to this left me cold. Not this. If the rest of the album is as good as the first two songs, we might be looking at the album of the year.

It's tough to rank stuff like that. I had a hard time deciding whether Jay-Z, for instance, should be ahead of NASA. I thought the former had more songs overall that I liked, but Blueprint 3 was definitely stronger at the top.

I also tried to take into account the "stickyness" factor. In October I probably would have had to flip a coin between the Decemberists and the Avett Brothers, but then I really fell in love with the Fanfarlo album. And six months ago, I would have bet money that the Silversun Pickups would have been a Top 5 album for me, but ultimately it didn't even make Honorable Mention.

Between SXSW and ACL, and my personal goal of seeking out as much new stuff as I could find, I was introduced to a lot of new bands and great music in 2009.

I really want to get behind Fanfarlo, but I just can't. "Comets" is a damn good song, but everything else on their album leaves me cold. I thought about going to see them to see if I dug their stuff more after seeing them live, but it was cold and I am very lazy.

Ghosts first caught my attention, because of it's similarities to The Decemberists' Sporting Life. I also really like Finish Line, Fire Escape, and Harold T. Wilkins.
