Here's my Shaggy Top 10 ballot:
1. Fanfarlo, Reservoir
2. Decemberists, The Hazards of Love
3. Avett Brothers, I and Love and You
4. Camera Obscura, My Maudlin Career
5. Phoenix, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
6. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, s/t
7. Metric, Fantasies
8. N.A.S.A., The Spirit of Apollo
9. Passion Pit, The Reeling
10. Jay-Z, Blueprint 3
HM:
The King Bucks, s/t
Muse, The Resistance
Pearl Jam, Backspace
Wale, Attention Deificit
It's tough to rank stuff like that. I had a hard time deciding whether Jay-Z, for instance, should be ahead of NASA. I thought the former had more songs overall that I liked, but Blueprint 3 was definitely stronger at the top.
I also tried to take into account the "stickyness" factor. In October I probably would have had to flip a coin between the Decemberists and the Avett Brothers, but then I really fell in love with the Fanfarlo album. And six months ago, I would have bet money that the Silversun Pickups would have been a Top 5 album for me, but ultimately it didn't even make Honorable Mention.
Between SXSW and ACL, and my personal goal of seeking out as much new stuff as I could find, I was introduced to a lot of new bands and great music in 2009.
