A few new updates:

(1) DL'd the new Silversun Pickups yesterday, but decided to tune into the Astros blowing another game last night, so I haven't given it a listen yet. I've read good things on Shaggy.

(2) New band I just recently discovered (even though they've been around a while): Camera Obscura. They have a chick lead singer, with a very interesting style... poppy and light, but melodic.

(3) My buddy Porter recommended the Doves to me the other day and I found some of their tracks yesterday. Not bad... Kind f a rootsy feel.

I give up.

I'm probably 2 or 3 years away from posting a 2009 song.

I thought I find a doozy a couple of days ago, and I was ready to share it in this very thread.

I have no idea how anyone can listen to the crap that Animal Collective puts out.

I'm having trouble finding new music that I like. It seems like I either absolutely hate or am completely not interested in 95% of the new stuff I hear these days.

My problem is more that I hear a song or two I like, but the rest of the album doesn't do it for me (see: The Hold Steady, last year). Or, I tire of something I liked very quickly (see: Fleet Foxes, last year, Ben Kweller, this year).

I checked out Gomez based on their following over at Shaggy, and occasionally I'll take a deeper look into a band I may have already dismissed because of sentiments posted there, but most of the new music I find these days comes from friend suggestions or bands that I see consistently pop up on Hype Machine.

Quite a few of the bands on my list there, in fact, came from doing some research on groups that are coming to ACL (Passion Pit, Phoenix, Elvis Perkins).

I listened to the new album by Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears and it's awesome. They're a bluesy soul band from Austin. There's a heavy James Brown influence in Joe Lewis' music. I loved the album.

I think Black Joe Lewis is one of those very rare musicians that gets a consensus thumbs up from lmfanzone.com.

I downloaded the yet-to-be released album "Josephine" by Magnolia Electric Company off of bittorrent this evening and am really enjoying it.

Not sure if any of you are Metric fans, but their new album "Fantasies" is pretty damn fantastic.

My favorite song right now is "use Somebody" by Kings of Leon. I'm not a big fan of a different single that I heard by them but they are OK.

I think they are going to be the new Coldplay... except actually tolerable.
why don't you run back to the sandbox where the rest of the kids are playing so the adults can have a discussion...it's over there....you see Howie, he's over there with PMS knocking over other kids sandcastles...looks like fun.

My new favorite find of the past few weeks is Deer Tick. They offer up a raspy, twangy assortment of southern rock/alt-country songs that have really resonated with me. In a lot of ways they remind me of a less country version of The Hangdogs, and they're similar in a lot of ways to The Basement, an Irish band I think I mentioned a few years ago. I think at last a few of you would like them.

I also procured the new Son Volt album. Oddly enough, they're a band I've known about for years, and despite they are in that same loose genre as the Old 97s, I've never really made the effort to listen to them. My buddy Portern, who many of you know, is a big fan of their front guy, Jay Farrar, and the new album is pretty good. I think, after a few listens, I like the Deer Tick release more, but they're both worth downloading, legally or otherwise.

The Danks are another relatively new band I just recently discovered. I think their new album is a notch or three below the other two I've mentioned, but it's not in any way terrible. Their wikipedia article compares them to The Strokes, who I think are okay, but nothing special. In listening to them I get the feeling that I would have liked them a lot more six to eight years ago.

Random music stuff:

--I loves me some Son Volt. I'd recommend "Trace" and "Wide Swing Tremelo." Jay Farrar's solo stuff is worth a listen as well. Also, "No Depression" by Uncle Tupelo if you're not already familiar with it. I thought the new album wasn't coming out until later this year. I'll check it out.

--I still haven't made up my mind about the new Wilco. Either way, I won't be going to see them when they roll through Texas.

--Bought tickets this morning for the Dinosaur Jr and Built To Spill show at The Granada in October.

--The Pixies are doing a tour that will consist of them playing "Doolittle" in its entirety. As of now, the closest they're getting to Texas is Denver and that sucks.
