Jake's and Keller's in Dallas are fantastic.

Another couple of places that are pretty good is Village Burger Bar and Twisted Root.

As mentioned, Whataburger is underrated on this list. I'm a fan.

If you get a chance to try Stackhouse Burgers in Deep Ellum, do it. On Gaston at Malcolm X near Baylor.

Smashburger gets a meh. I wanted to like it, and it looked excellent, but it was just bland. Fries were meh also. (I got a basic burger with cheddar and regular fries)

I wouldn't go so far as to say that it sucks, but it's overpriced for sure. I did not think it was all that special either time I had it, and it's ridiculous to wait in line for a burger. There are plenty of good burger options in this town, and I don't know why so many people rave about Hopdoddy. All in all I would just as soon eat Whataburger as about any burger people rave about.

I like Whataburger but I don't think it is as good as Hopdoddy.

Places like Hopdoddy, Twisted Root, Villiage Burger Bar, Liberty Burger aren't really supposed to compete with Whataburger.

I would say all mentioned are pretty solid.

I still need to try a Hat Creek and Mighty Fine down in Austin. I had H Creek at the stadium but I feel that I need to go to the restaurant to get the real deal.

Agreed.....I actually like Hopdoddy, but when you combine the cost with the fact that I might have to wait in line for 30-45 minutes to get it......well F that......but they are good burgers, just not that good.

Go get you some Mighty Fine next time you're in town Seth.....definitely my favorite burger in town.

Has anyone noticed their overhauling the Dan's Hamburgers locations? The one over on Manchaca has been completely renovated WITH A DRIVE-THRU, which is awesome. There's one over by my house that I drive by every day home, but I'm a lazy-ass and the requirement to get out of my car and walk inside to actually get your burger prevents that from ever happening. I don't mind doing that for Mighty Fine, but Dan's isn't quite on that level.

There's a Smashburger opening up in Mueller this year Drew.....haven't eaten at one yet, but hopefully it's better than U2's experience.

Seth- I get that they don't compete, but in the end they're both still burgers. One costs $6 and is ready in 5 minutes. One costs $10 and requires a half-hour wait (on a good day). The latter is not significantly better than the former (or better at all, IMO), so why go to the latter? Because it's trendy? It's not like the difference in John Mueller or Franklin compared to Rudy's.

How utilitarian of you. And by the way, I'm with you for an everyday type of deal. BUT 1) I'm just reacting to some of the comments that Hopdoddy sucks (not true. may not be worth the wait but it doesn't suck) 2) I also feel there is definitely a time & place for Hopdoddy or some of the other players... if I'm in Austin meeting you guys for lunch, Hopdoddy would be a higher contender than Whataburger for our business.

Jamie - MIghty Fine is definitely on the list! My interpretation is that it is a middle market player like Five Guys and Mooyah, right?

Seriously, Hopdoddy are just not even good burgers. There was a Serious Eats article about it, and it nailed it perfectly. Spongy and sausage-like texture, with very poor seasoning and searing.

Dude, come on now. Player's and Burger Tex? You've got to be kidding. I don't know most of these places... Fuddrucker's does have a good burger so I can understand the argument but I would disagree. I'm guessing that you are blending in the time and cost element into the equation which is fine. Even with those blended in BT and Player's don't make the cut.

I ate at "Five Guys" yesterday to pass time waiting on an oil change.

Wow I can't believe that place has it's own thread. It's crazy to compare it to Mighty Fine. Better debateable comps would be Burger King and Jack in the Box.

Greasy shit my feet were slipping on the floor, place has ambience of a old Kmart snack bar only difference is wading through peanut shells rather than popcorn. Cheeseburger was decent, but those people could learn a few things from a place like McDonalds.
